One year on…

1 year ago today I headed away to walk across Spain.

Today I set out on my biggest mental and physical challenge yet!
Walking the Pacific Crest Trail in America. From the boarder of Mexico to the boarder of Canada, aligned with the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges, which lie 100 to 150 miles east of the U.S. Pacific coast. Total of 4500km, the route passes through 25 national forests and 7 national parks. Highest pass 4009 meters. Im comfortable with the 20-30 miles a day I will have to walk. I’m comfortable with sleeping in my tent and eating rehydrated food for 6 months. My challenge will be the physical fatigue and the mental challenge of being away from family and friends for 6 months.
Thanks to my amazing husband and kids in supporting this crazy adventure, you guys are my rock!

Base weight 5.8kg. Only additions will be food and water.

I will be writing my usual blog but not able to post to Facebook often. If you want to follow, subscribe to irenegroundstravels.com

Thanks to Back Country Cuisine and OSM for the months of great NZ food.

  1. Happy for you Irene and impressed that you have the drive and courage to pursue this dream on your own for 6 months, far from your amazing family – agree that will be the hardest part for you and for them! Good luck and much love to all of you!!!

    1. You are one crazy chick Irene Ground ! As you know, Zella and I rode up the West coast of America last year from Mexico and up into Canada.
We’ve been up and over the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades.
We zig zagged across the PCT many times and funny every time we cross it I thought of you.
But I didn’t think you were going to do it !
Good luck Irene, those deserts and mountains are tough, and your a tough woman on one hell of a ride.
      Go get em!
