Day 2 – Fred Canyon – 27km

Woke at 5.30 to try and get in as many miles as we could before the heat hit…. Too late 7.30 and it felt like 30 degrees. Straight out of camp I had an hour climb straight up then another 1.5 hr to a small place called lake MorenaSet up on the edge of a camp ground was a group of trail angels. Bagels, cream cheese, salad, tomatoes, jam and hot coffee…. Oh and a camp chair, luxury. Amazing, we all stopped for a good hourNext stop was a water hole approx 10km away, was really keen to wash some sweat and grime away. Once again super hot, hard to explain what walking in that heat feels like. Another steep climb but the rocks and landscape was cool. Still no snakes for me today. Wow the creek was awesome, creeks here so far seem to be dried up or ankle deep just about to dry up. This creek was enough to get in and float… Must be a kiwi thing but I took off my shoes and floated straight in, clothes and all! We then lay around on the rocks like lizards for half hour before last slog to a camp. Still with the same group, about 10 of us all mixed ages (I’m the oldest of course) Mash potatos for dinner again. Asleep by 8pm😘
